Day 3: Nairobi/Maasai Mara

This morning we fly over the Great Rift Valley to Maasai Mara and here we find the old Africa of the movies, with rolling grasslands dotted by acacia trees and sweeping plains teeming with wildlife. This northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem, one of the world’s most rewarding wildlife observation areas, virtually throbs with life. An impressive feature is the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle from the plains of the Serengeti that cross the Tanzanian border and rivers to reach the Mara’s lush grassland from late June, hunted by the predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and circled by vultures as the journey unfolds. Their dramatic river crossings are a reality for tourists visiting in July – August. Apart from the seasonal migration, game viewing is excellent year round. Bird enthusiasts will thrill at the prospect of spotting some 400 species of birds recorded in the Mara, at least 53 of them are raptors.

Day 4/5: Maasai Mara

Morning and evening game drives. Enjoy the view from the poolside lounge and sign up for optional activities including hot air balloon over the Mara. As its name suggest the Maasai Mara is the home of the fabled Maasai people. Often strikingly tall and slender, swathed in brilliant red cloth ‘Shukas’, hung about with beads and metal jewellery, the young men (Ilmmuran) favor long, plaited, ochre-daubed hairstyles and have a formidable reputation for glamour, prowess and ferocity. Traditionally the Maasai live off the milk and blood of their beloved cattle and believe that all the world’s cattle are theirs by God-given right. Their nomadic and pastoral lifestyle, though historically based on the pursuit of the migratory wildlife, is slowly changing thanks to a combination of education, political leaders, favorable new laws, projects, and expanding work opportunities.

You have the option to visit a Maasai village (additional cost) to see a way of life that has survived almost unchanged for generations. Many special events are planned here.
